Another Day Ended

Another day ended, and I have not seen
nor will see such things as I have today;
the sunset is faded and I have not been
myself or another on this transient day.

Another day ended, and I have not walked
on my long, dusty path. Rain has not fallen,
nor footprints been made in soft, sandy waters;
another day ended and no trace will there be
of today, or tomorrow, or eternity.

Another ended and I have not died
nor fallen in love, nor seen a man’s face
I will longer remember than this even’s final thought;
I have not completed the song on my table
nor closed my eyes in prayer and it’s another day ended.

Another day ended and I have not lost
a someone I love, and I have not cried
for a reason or simply no reason at all;
I have not forgiven, nor danced to a song
long gone and forgotten and once again, it’s

Another day ended. Bright stars gently shine—
shine close and distant at the very same time.
the moon’s place is vacant and I have not been
myself or another on this transient day.

Another Day Ended

About This Poem

This is a piece on that peculiar, slightly unsettling feeling that comes when a day is ending and you have hardly noticed it slip by. We dismiss it and assure ourselves that tomorrow will be better, longer, and more memorable—until the next evening comes and we find ourselves thinking the exact same thing for the following day.

Time progresses steadily at the same velocity it always has—it is only our perception of it that changes. I wrote this poem to remind myself of all the possibilities in a single day and that our entire lives, in a sense, are only as long as the amount of time between now and the sunset.
