Dreaming of You

Moths dance in the streetlight as
You lean on my shoulder. Shadows play
On a brick wall and
We are silent.
We do not think, but watch
Moonlit leaves wave
And listen to the hum of night
Against the foreground of each other’s breathing.

And though the clouds have covered
The stars I know from view
Though the words you whispered
Are no longer true
I still say them to myself
And dream the voice is you
And dream the voice is you.

We are standing on a bridge
The sunlight is white and strange
Your face is marble and stone
Marble and stone—and the wind
Blows through us as we stand
From a great height over a river
I once dropped a ring into
A ring for you.

And though a hand has covered
The eyes I know from view
Though the words I whispered
Are no longer true
I still say them to myself
And dream I speak to you
And dream I speak to you.
