Flowers

Cast onto stone;
petals fall. Raindrops
splash down and stain.
You adorn the dead—the dead
I love—except, you too wither and
perish. I will
gather your blood rain-soaked petals
and place them in the meter of ground
between him and me. I will
find new versions of you and
adorn the dead I love
again; I will place and replace
your dying petals with new
until I too
wither and perish.

About This Poem

One of the saddest things I have ever seen is a gravestone with old, wilted flowers from months, if not years ago.

“So long as we are being remembered, we remain alive.”

- Carlos Ruiz Zafón, The Shadow of the Wind
