Nicolas Greenwood

Smoking

Leaning on a wall
laughing hoarsely
eyes bleary and
half-closed from smiling
—or is it a smirk?
Ashes float down.
He doesn’t have a mother
he must go to sleep
alone in his room
with the door closed
as the television echoes
from another room.

Smoking
