To the Eagle
flying at so great a height -
that to my eyes you’re but a sliver
fading into endless blue; —
in my dreams I fly your flight -
and turn the clouds into ground below me
—a ground the wind had raised me through.
When I close my eyes, this land I see:
an empty place, by hands untouched;
of wind, and mist, and sun rays bright.
And a strange, glistening eternity
with wings outstretched in flight with you
does blind my feeble, mortal sight.
